Jerime Anderson recorded 13 points for the Bruins (3-6), who ended a five-game losing streak. Nelson, Honeycutt and Anderson all had career highs. During the game, Nelson received a black eye and a cut on his cheek. He said, "I keep looking like a boxer more and more."

UCLA coach Ben Howland told the press, "It was a better effort to start the game." The coach continued to say it was great to get a win against a good team after dropping five games in a row. He admitted that the Bruins needed the victory and it was "good for team morale." The Bruins were the aggressors from the start, registering 100 points for just the second time in Howland's defensive-minded tenure. UCLA finished the game with seven steals, including three by Lee that led to easy baskets.

Jahmar Young led the Aggies with 13 points and Gordo Castillo and Jonathan Gibson both scored 11 points in the first meeting between the schools since 2005-06. New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies, a UCLA graduate, noted that the Bruins played tough defensively. The coach added that the Aggies couldn't get into a flow.

The Bruins were coming off an 18-point lost to Mississippi State in the John R. Wooden Classic last weekend in which they lost their fifth straight game in front of the school's legendary former coach. UCLA played better against the Aggies (3-6). They made free throws and hit from long range, things that had been lacking in most of their first eight games.

After turning the ball over twice to start the game, the Bruins settled down and ran off to a 20-8 lead. Lee and Roll swished back-to-back 3s before New Mexico State's Hamidu Rahman gave his team its first field goal. After that, Nikola Dragovic's 3-pointer launched the Bruins on a 21-6 spree, highlighted by five points each from Dragovic and Roll and four by Lee. The Bruins shot 61 percent from the field in the first half and Lee was five of six and knocked down four of his free throws. Lee enjoyed contributing to the explosive UCLA offense. After the game, he stated, "It was real fun, getting on the open floor and making that extra pass."

The Bruins had a 21-point lead by halftime. They continued to dominate in the second half, going on a 15-3 run early in the third quarter. Lee and Anderson scored five points apiece and held New Mexico State to one field goal in the first five minutes of the third. UCLA then scored on nearly every possession they had. Honeycutt claimed UCLA wanted to keep pushing the ball "down their throat." The Bruins were able to do just that while playing strong on defense. New Mexico State made 11 3-pointers in the second half, but they never threatened the Bruins.
