. 21 Gonzaga overcame the absence of leading scorer Matt Bouldin to beat Davidson 103-91 on Dec. 12. The Bulldogs have had issues at the free-throw line the last few games, but they got plenty of practice at the charity stripe on Saturday. Without two-time All-WCC guard Bouldin, the Bulldogs got help from Harris and Rob Scare, sprinkled in several full-court dashes by Demetri "Meech" Goodson and made a living at the foul line. It was Gonzaga's first win at Key Arena since 2005. Sacre (23 points) and Goodson (22 points) also had career highs.
Gonzaga and Sacre, a 7-foot sophomore, overpowered the smaller Wildcats inside, making 41 of a Zags record 54 free throws. Sacre was 11 for 18 from the line, and Harris was 11 of 14. Thanks to an unending parade of free throws, the Bulldogs (8-2) scored their most points since a 109-106 victory over Michigan State in Hawaii on Dec. 22, 2005. Portland recently downed the Denver Pioneers 72-62 in a non-conference game. Kramer Knutson and T.J. Campbell scored 11 points apiece for the Pilots (6-3), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Luke Sikma added nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Pilots stayed hot in the second half, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor. Portland had a 30-22 advantage on the glass and was 18 of 24 shooting at the foul line.
So how will the Pilots fare against the Bulldogs? Portland cannot shut down Harris, Goodson, and Sacre all at the same time. Goodson is considered to be the top two or three fastest players in all of college basketball. The point guard has dominated the opposition by cutting through the lanes on larger, tougher opponents. That combined with Harris' and Sacre's height advantage should be enough to beat the Pilots.
If you're interested in college hoops, you might want to see Oregon challenge Oregon State on Jan. 10. Although the Ducks recently lost against Saint Mary's, Malcolm Armstead scored 14 points for Oregon (4-4), who led 34-33 at the break. E.J. Singler added 12 points and Michael Dunigan had 10. The Ducks cannot bounce the Beavers if Armstead, Singler, and Dunigan don't perform well. Oregon State (4-4) struggled in their last contest against Nebraska. The Beavers only registered four points in the final four minutes. Calvin Haynes and Seth Tarver must step up their game for Oregon State if they plan to upset the Ducks.
If you're interested in catching a professional game, the Cleveland Cavaliers visit the Portland Trailblazers on Jan. 10. Cleveland's Mo Williams, Anthony Parker, LeBron James, J.J Hickson and Shaquille O'Neal started the season slow, but have played well recently. The Cavaliers (16-7) are 7-5 on the road this season. Portland (14-11) has been plagued by injuries lately. Greg Oden, the top pick in the 2007 draft, had surgery on Dec. 6 to repair a left patella fracture and is out for the season. Portland coach Nate McMillan looks to get "Blazer Nation" back on track with a win at home over the Cavaliers.
